GENEVA OCEAN ACADEMY
Redesigning an Educational Platform to Inspire Ocean Awareness and Environmental Action
Geneva Ocean Academy is a Swiss non-profit organization dedicated to ocean conservation, marine education, and environmental awareness.
Through educational programs, scientific expeditions, marine biology courses, and community initiatives, the organization aims to reconnect people with the ocean and encourage positive environmental action.
As part of a personal design challenge, I chose to redesign the Academy's website to explore how a stronger digital experience could better communicate its mission, engage visitors, and showcase its educational content.
The objective was to modernize the platform while preserving its scientific credibility and environmental values.
Mission
My mission was to rethink the digital identity of Geneva Ocean Academy through a more contemporary, immersive, and accessible user experience.
The redesign focused on improving content organization, navigation clarity, and visual storytelling while maintaining the educational nature of the platform.
The project included the redesign of several key pages, including: Homepage, About the Organization, Marine Biology Courses, Expeditions, Membership Page, Contact Page, Custom 404 Page.
Objectives
01 | Modernize the Digital Experience
Create a contemporary interface aligned with modern web standards while strengthening the platform's credibility.
02 | Improve Navigation and Accessibility
Help visitors easily discover educational resources, events, expeditions, and membership opportunities.
03 | Strengthen Environmental Storytelling
Highlight the organization's mission through immersive visuals and a stronger emotional connection with ocean conservation.
04 | Increase Content Readability
Organize large volumes of information into a clearer and more engaging browsing experience.
Strategic Value
01 | Support Environmental Awareness
Use design as a tool to make educational content more accessible and impactful.
02 | Increase Community Engagement
Encourage visitors to participate in courses, expeditions, and membership programs.
03 | Build Trust and Credibility
Reinforce the perception of Geneva Ocean Academy as a professional and committed environmental organization.
The Challenge
The original website contained a significant amount of valuable information about marine conservation, scientific projects, educational programs, and upcoming expeditions.
However, several challenges limited the overall user experience: Outdated visual design, Limited content hierarchy, Dense information architecture, Lack of visual immersion, Inconsistent emphasis on key actions and programs.
The challenge was therefore both aesthetic and strategic:
How might we transform a content-heavy educational platform into a modern and engaging experience that inspires users to learn, participate, and take action for ocean conservation?
Research et Exploration
To define the new direction, I first analyzed the existing platform and identified opportunities to improve both usability and visual communication.
Methodologies
UX Audit
Evaluation of navigation patterns, information architecture, visual hierarchy, and user flows across the website.
Benchmark Analysis
Research on environmental organizations, educational platforms, and conservation-focused websites to identify best practices.
Moodboard Creation
Development of visual territories inspired by marine ecosystems, scientific exploration, and contemporary editorial design.
Wireframing
Testing different layouts and content structures to improve readability and navigation efficiency.
High-Fidelity Design
Creation of responsive interface concepts bringing together educational content and immersive storytelling.

My Learnings
01 | Content Is Only Valuable If Users Can Easily Access It
Even the most informative content can lose impact when it is difficult to navigate. Organizing information effectively is just as important as creating it.
02 | Emotional Design Supports Educational Goals
People engage more deeply with causes when information is presented through compelling visual storytelling. Design can transform awareness into interest and action.
03 | Accessibility and Aesthetics Must Work Together
Creating a visually immersive experience should never come at the expense of clarity. The best interfaces successfully balance both.
04 | Non-Profit Organizations Deserve Strong Digital Experiences
Many organizations focus heavily on their mission while underestimating the importance of their digital presence. This project reinforced how design can amplify the impact of meaningful causes.
05 | Design Can Inspire Action
Beyond informing users, digital experiences can motivate participation, engagement, and positive change. This project reminded me that design has the power to support missions that matter.
